TRINIDAD HIGHLIGHTS
POS CITY TOUR / PANORAMIC VIEW / SUBURBS /
COUNTRYSIDE / COASTAL DRIVE / PANORAMIC VIEW
/ MARACAS BEACH
Duration: 4 hours
This tour combines the highlights of Port of
Spain with beautiful sights of
the countryside and an amazing scenic drive
up the North Coast to our most
popular beach, Maracas Bay.
We depart the hotel and make our way to
downtown Port of Spain. Here we
experience lively Independence Square with
its imposing Central Bank and
Brian Lara Promenade. We continue our tour
passing various interesting
sights like the Trinity Church, the
Parliamentary Building (Red House), the
Supreme Court, our most prestigious High
School St Joseph's Convent, the
Museum of Natural History and at last the
"world's largest roundabout", the
Queens Park Savannah. This 200-acre
recreational Park is lined with exotic
trees and interesting colonial style
buildings. The most impressive among
these are the "Magnificent Seven", a row of
imposing mansions with amazing
architectural designs. We stop at the
Botanical Gardens/President's House, where
we take a short guided walk through the
gardens. Now it's on to the scenic Lady
Young Road. We stop at a fantastic lookout
for photographs of panoramic Port of Spain
and environs and the Gulf of Paria. On a
clear day you can see Venezuela from here!
We continue our drive through various
suburbs. Experience the lively hustle
and bustle of the Eastern Main Road, typical
suburban Caribbean scenery. Now it’s on to
Santa Cruz, a lush green agricultural valley
with interesting cocoa and coffee
plantations. Trinidadians use this pure
organic cocoa (without additives)
and make "cocoa tea" or "chocolate tea" as
we call it here in Trinidad..
Continuing our drive we now start our scenic
journey up the North Coast
Road, enjoying the panoramic views of the
Paramin Hills, the highly
residential valleys, the Northern Range and
the rain forest. The most
astounding view awaits us when we reach the
Caribbean Sea. A photo stop at
the Maracas Lookout is most rewarding. A
short drive now brings us to our
last stop, Maracas Beach. Enjoy the natural
ambiance of this beach with its
beautiful palm-fringed coastline and
unspoilt lush green mountains as a
back-drop. Here you can take a walk along
the beach or just relax at one of
the beach huts for a cool drink and a crispy
Bake & Shark, the most popular
specialty of this beach (on own). On our
return we drive via the scenic North Coast
Road and then take a different route via
Maraval to Port of Spain and back
to the ship.
Tour B:
MARACAS BEACH TRIP
POS CITY TOUR / PANORAMIC VIEW / SUBURBS /
COUNTRYSIDE / COASTAL DRIVE / PANORAMIC VIEW
/ MARACAS BEACH
Duration: 3.5 hours
A visit to this most spectacular beach not
only offers you the opportunity of a swim in
the cool waters of the Caribbean Sea but
also provides you with a most picturesque
scenic drive along the coastline.
This trip is a most relaxing way to spend a
morning or afternoon allowing about 2.5
hours on beautiful Maracas Beach. The drive
leads us through the residential areas of
St. Clair and Maraval where we see the
typical Caribbean hustle and bustle. We now
continue up the stunning scenic North Coast
Road – admire the view to the Paramin hills
covered with plantations of herbs and spices
and the rainforest on the other side. Upon
reaching the Caribbean Sea we get the most
spectacular panoramic view of the ocean. A
short stop at the Maracas Lookout gives you
the opportunity for some pictures of the
Caribbean Sea and the surrounding Bays,
including Maracas Bay.
Maracas Beach is the most popular beach in
Trinidad. Its natural bay is surrounded with
lush green rainforest and its sandy beach is
lined with coconut trees ….typical unspoilt
Caribbean scenery without high-rise hotels!
Practically untouched by tourism this beach
will offer the privacy and special ambiance
only Trinidad can offer. There are several
small huts where drinks and various local
specialties are offered. Try the famous
“Bake & Shark” (hot crispy shark sandwich
with homemade bread). It tastes absolutely
delightful! There are many different sauces
from which you can choose, just beware of
the very hot peppersauce! (Please note: not
incl. In tour price)
Basic dressing rooms with changing and
toilet facilities are available (incl.).
The return drive takes us via the same
route.

Tour D:
CARONI BIRD SANCTUARY BOAT TOUR
DRIVE TO CARONI BIRD SANCTUARY VIA HIGHWAY /
BOAT RIDE THROUGH THE MANGROVE SWAMP VO VIEW
BIRDS
Duration: 4 hours (PM)
Bird life is particularly abundant in
Trinidad and this tour gives a delightful
introduction to one of the many aspects of
Trinidad’s wild life. A world-class
destination for bird watchers and outdoor
enthusiasts, the Caroni Bird Sanctuary is a
48 square mile wetland area on the North
West Coast of Trinidad, part Mangrove Swamp
and part Lagoon. It is the home of the
National Bird of Trinidad, the bright red
Scarlet Ibis. Our tour will carry us into
the beautiful serene landscape of this
untouched mangrove swamp with its amazing
open lagoons and waterways. Enjoy the sight
of this rare landscape with a backdrop of
the imposing Northern Range in the distance…
Upon arrival you will board a large
flat-bottomed boat with an outboard motor
and slowly travel along the beautiful
waterways and lagoons admiring the beauty of
the landscape and a variety of birds,
crustaceans and other wildlife. Of the 168
species of wildlife you may spot many new
species including the neotropical Cormorant,
large-billed tern, tri-coloured heron,
red-capped cardinal, snowy egret or
bicoloured cane-bill to name just a few.
Gliding along the many channels and lagoons
you will see red, black and white mangroves
and many tiny oysters clinging to the roots
of the mangroves. The tree climbing and
fiddler crabs are an important staple of the
diet of the wetland birds living in this
area. You will see them clinging on the
mangrove roots or scurrying across the many
mudflats. There are possible sightings of
non-poisonous snakes sleeping coiled up in
the branches of the trees (Cook’s Tree Boa),
a caiman or a silky anteater.
The highlight of this tour though is the
rare protected Scarlet Ibis. These brightly
coloured birds feed and nest in this area
and every evening at sunset they fly to
their roosting trees in flocks, the viewing
of which is a delightful experience. After
our slow ride through the many channels and
lagoons we finally stop the boat at a safe
noise distance from the roosting site of
these birds. The boat becomes your floating
vantage point of witnessing the birds coming
in to roost, flying in unison – a cloud of
red against the evening sky. The birds
settle in the mangrove trees as the sun is
about to set. It is a most memorable and
spectacular sight. Many who have observed
this rewarding spectacle say the mangroves
look like a Christmas tree decorated in
red….the solemn quiet atmosphere of the
swamp at sunset enhances your optical
experience…on our return drive we leave the
many colours of the tropical sunset behind.
The Caroni Mangrove Swamp is a famous
eco-tourism site and touching of any animals
seen (i.e. silky anteater) is prohibited.
The boats will stop at a safe noise level
distance from the Scarlet Ibis roosting
site.
The return drive to the ship takes place
along the same route.

swamp where the only living beings you will
meet are birds, crustatians, reptiles and
maybe a simple pirogue with some
fishermen…This nature tour is a beautiful
peaceful experience of an unspoilt wetland
area with beautiful landscapes.
Upon arrival you will board a large
flat-bottomed boat with an outboard motor
and slowly travel along the beautiful
waterways and lagoons admiring the beauty of
the landscape and a variety of birds,

sleeping coiled up in the branches of the
trees, a caiman or a silky anteater. Some
Scarlet Ibis will be seen flying overhead or

Mount St. Benedict Monastery is located. Our

acres of the thickly forested Arima Valley.

humming birds love to feed from the
sugarwater-filled containers hanging right
in front your nose! They will stay quite
some time for you to take fantastic
photographs. We also might see the large
tegu lizard and the guinea pig like
“agouti”. After our beautiful arrayed buffet
lunch (delicious local food) we go for a
guided walk through the forest. Here we see
interesting flora and fauna, as well as
birds and other wildlife, including insects.
We will learn about the many different
medicinal herbs and its uses, the history of
the Asa Wright Centre, the endangered
oilbirds that live in a cave nearby (no
visit), the dancing manakin bird etc.
Our return drive takes place via the same
route.

BIRD SANCTUARY

Our drive continues via highway to Central

population is concentrated. Our population
is about 40% East Indian and their culture
is very strong in Trinidad. We pass through
a totally different landscape now – the
low-lying flat plains of Central Trinidad
with the Northern Range towering in the
background. Here we see many colourful
prayerflags in front of the houses of the
Hindus, we enjoy the typical East Indian
neighborhoods with the lively hustle and
bustle of every day life. Finally we stop at
the Dattatreya Yoga Center (www.dattapeetham.com),
the Ashram of a famous East Indian Guru, Sri
Swamiji who resides in India. It is believed
that he is the living example of divinity
personified. His large impressive temple was
formally opened in June 2003 and looks like
a big pink “wedding cake” in the distance,
especially beautiful against the deep blue
sky. It contains several “murtis” (icons) of
the different Hindu deities and beautiful
ornaments. Our tour guide will give us deep
founded explanations about their meaning. We
also admire the world’s largest statue (out
of India) of the East-Indian ‘monkey god’,
Lord Hanuman (85 feet) that is situated in
front of the temple. A dress code is to be
observed here – no short pants/skirts, no
sleeveless tops. Photographs can be taken
liberally outside of the temple, within the
temple photographs are prohibited.

Ibis will be seen flying overhead or feeding
in the mangroves, also the blue heron, the
snowy egrets and other wetland birds.
Sit back and relax and enjoy this peaceful
ride through the wide-open lagoons and the
majestic Northern Range towering in the
background. Glide through the narrow
waterways lined with the long roots of the
red mangroves and feel the almost eerie
atmosphere of this unusual place.
